In the Middle of the Night

By Bridgid and M

Jack reached out to feel her. He could never get over the fact that he waked up to her every morning.

It was 06:30 and his mind was active.  He should get up but, her luscious body made him stay. He would stand for Mayor; she would support him but, was Sid a real threat?

As he pulled her into his naked body, drank in the smell of her, he knew he could do it. With his Siren on board he could do anything.

"What's on your mind, Aubrey?" she asked, half asleep. As if she didn't know. "You're warm, you know?"

The feel of him brought little tingles to her and even though he was warm she seemed to have goose bumps all over her body.

"Do you think I can do this Madam? If I fail and, I do not intend to, will you think  less of me?" His hands caressed her, his siren.

"Do what?" she wasn't sure what he was referring to but she could guess. "Make love?"

"Bridgid, have I ever failed to make love to you?  If I did not know that you were still half asleep I would be affronted.  I am referring to standing for mayor." He said as he moved her hair to kiss the back of her neck.

"You fail? Perish the thought."

Turning so they were face to face she kissed his face at the side of his nose.

"SID is just a fly in the ointment. Who in their right mind would vote for him with the exception of his girlfriend, Kate?" she affirmed. "and himself. He'll get at least two votes but you need to know that you are a respected member of this community with its best interest at heart. SID has SID's best interest at heart."

"We can talk about it later, right now there are more important things on my mind. Putting a hand under the covers he let his fingers trace the contours of her body. "Now this is indeed a good way to start the day."

All thoughts of elections left him as he concentrated on other matters.

She knew the election was not far from his mind but like any man, he could be distracted for a bit by two things...love and a good meal and to keep him from fretting, she'd be sure to give him plenty of both.

Though he was touching her , she too was thinking about the election. If he won, she'd be a kind of first lady at the Glen. Did that mean she'd have to kiss babies and dress differently?

"Oh God, Jack!"

That could have been interpreted as a reaction to the heat of the moment but the tone was not quite right.

Aubrey froze. "What is it my love, are you unwell?"  His ardor cooled and concern took over. Bridgid was never unwell, never let herself be. The hand that been caressing her now moved to take her chin between thumb and index finger. "What is it?" He reiterated looking directly into her eyes."

Taking hold of his wrist, she pressed her cheek into the palm of his hand.

"I'm not sick, Jack. I'm sorry. I think I'm feeling election jitters too. It's not that I'm nervous about it in general. I'm sure it will be fine but I'm not used to being in the public eye. What if I don't meet up to standards? I don't want to pull you down with me."

"What do you mean pull me down with you, and whose standards are you talking about? Sometimes I just don't understand you madam. You are a beautiful, intelligent, and brave.  You know your own mind and are not afraid to tell people what you think.  I am proud to call you mine, proud to have you on my arm.  You more than meet my standards and that is all that should matter."

It took her a moment to process all of what he said but honestly, she never doubted he felt that way about her. Not for one moment.

"Damn you, Aubrey. I love you so much and I know I say it all the time but…"

Before she finished her sentence, the sound of the weather radio they had in their bedroom interrupted with a buzz and squeal. Bridgid got up quickly to turn it up and she stood there with her arms across her chest to listen.

"Australian weather service has issued a severe storm warning with high winds and flash flooding likely during this event." the announcer’s voice fell heavy.

She turned to look at Jack but he was already up and getting dressed. They both knew what they had to do. They had to batten down the hatches of a ship that was docked at Coffs. This could be a very long day.

TBC.
