Miss Peeg’s Phone Call

By Atonia and Layne

Miss Peeg made her morning tea before she tackled the mail, there seemed to be a lot of it this morning. Seated at her desk she began the task of slitting the envelopes dislodging their contents and attaching the envelope to the papers with a paperclip. That’s the way she’d always done it and therefore the proper way to present mail to her boss.

Her boss however was off on his honeymoon. She quickly scanned over the documents to make sure nothing demanded immediate attention. Oh there was a postcard from Mr. and Mrs. Roberts, how nice for them to think of her. She smiled sweetly and placed it aside.

Ah this is what she had been waiting for, the final deeds appropriately signed and sealed for the Wades. She went over them carefully and finding no fault made copies and placed them in Wade’s file. Now she would have a delicious phone call to make. She stopped and sipped her tea remembering Mr. Wade and his business manager Mr. Evans. Mr. Evans she judged to be a man of business, honest as he needed to be; Mr. Wade, however was a different kettle of fish. Oh she had met his kind before…where was it Hong Kong…perhaps it was India…no matter they were everywhere and usually as handsome as Adonis.

A loud noise brought her out of her reverie; it must be that young man, the plumber upstairs finishing up the bathrooms. Mr. Roberts had decided to complete the upstairs apartment over his office and rent it out. She walked outside and around to the side of the building shading her eyes.

"Yoo Hoo!" she called out and seeing his head pop out of the door, "I just wanted to make sure it was you and not some vagrant, thank you."

She cleared her desk except for the Wade papers and reached for her phone numbers.

"I wonder if I might speak to Mr. Wade or Mr. Evans please this is Miss Peeg of Solicitor Robert’s office."

"Oh hello, Miss Peeg."  Liana answered the phone breathlessly, having run in from the flower bed by the front door.  "Hold on one minute.  I'll transfer you to Ben's study."

Dan Evans picked up the phone and listened for a moment.  "Hello, Miss Peeg.  Yes, Ben's right here."  He handed the phone to Ben Wade

"Mr. Wade, this is Miss Peeg, Mr. Roberts assistant, he asked me to let you know when the finalized deed for the property transfer arrived. It arrived this morning and is available for you to pick up at your convenience."

"Well, thank you very much, ma'am."  Ben used the slow, charming drawl that he always used with women on the phone.  And he was very happy to get the call.  He'd been looking forward to getting that deed in his possession.  "I'll be sendin' someone over to pick it up today."

Miss Peeg smiled at the drawl, "excellent Mr. Wade I'll have it ready, good bye Sir." She'd heard that drawl before...where was it now...oh well it certainly wasn't from Mr. Roberts meeting...but still she knew she'd heard that voice before or certainly one very like it. Something to play in the back of her mind for awhile until it bore fruit.

Ben was smiling at Dan Evans.  "Well, Dan, the papers are ready and the property's in my name now.  Guess we should get them picked and get everything in order."
