Wings

by Bridgid

Lachlan hadn’t felt this much joy in donkey’s ears. Not only was he home in Australia but he had her with him. Never in his wildest dreams had he thought this would happen.

Australia had been relegated in his mind as part of his past. How was he supposed to know that Ashley not only had cousins but some rich rellie who’d leave her some of the swellest real estate down under? He had to pinch himself, several times.

He turned to look at her. She was beautiful all decked out in yellow. It was his favorite color and it went so well with blue.

..as in the wild blue yonder.

Her wings stretched proudly where she sat there on the amber field. He walked up to her to touch her, savoring the feel of her cool body. How could he have ever imagined living without his pride and joy? It seemed at one point that he would lose her but things were apples now and he had everything he ever wanted and needed,.

"Ah love, it’s been so long since we’ve been together." he touched her side, savoring the smoothness. "I thought I’d lost you forever but now you’re here with me in this little piece of heaven called Oz.

Standing back he squared his shoulders. "Remember our verses, love? Cause I do…

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunwards I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds – and done a thousand things …

Pride swelled in his voice as he recited John Magee’s lament. He moved to stand in front of her, reaching out with affection as he continued.

You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung.  High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along and flug. My eager craft through footless halls of air,

"We’ve been alone together so many times, love. We know each other so well. I can tell what you’re going to do just by the way you feel in my hands. I can close my eyes and listen to you. I know exactly how you feel just by the way you sound."

Lachlan walked around her then stopped once again just off the tip of her nose.

Up, up the long delirious burning blue  I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy race,  Where never lark, or even eagle, flew;  And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of god.

He paused for a moment then he spread his arms. "Thank you for that. Thank you for taking me places that few men get to see. There will always be a place in my heart for you. "The way he looked at her could make any woman envious.

Except one. He could walk away from the yellow beauty at the mere sound of HER sighs. Who was it you ask?

 Ashley!

"Yes, we are home, love." He smiled just before he kissed her soundly."
