“Unraveling the Truth” – Part 2
Colin lowered his eyes, “What the fuck do you mean you’re the only one that can get Raine back?” His patience was now completely worn thin with his brother-in-law, but Adam wasn’t talking – he’d finally passed out cold from whatever drugs he’d taken.
Colin slapped at his face, then ran to the kitchen to fetch a glass of cold water and poured it on Adam’s head, all in the hopes of reviving him. Adam stirred a bit, cursed at him under his breath, but it was no use – he wouldn’t wake up.
Panicking, Colin dug out his cell phone and dialed his sister’s number. He held his breath as he listened to each ring, waiting for her to pick up, but she never did. He cursed and slammed the phone down and looked back over at Adam.
“Get your arse up,” he told his still-half-unconscious brother-in-law, “You’re gonna help me get my sister back if it’s the last thing you do.” He grabbed hold of the lad’s jacket and using his crutches to balance himself, he managed to get Adam into a sitting position.
“Wha?” Adam slurred, opening his blurry, blood-shot eyes. “Col? What...um... what time is it?”
“Time for you to stop fucking around with me and tell me where my sister is,” Colin replied, angrily. He sat down on the chair across from Adam, his elbows resting on his knees as he tried to pry as much information as he could from the lad.
“Raine? Oh shit! Raine!” Adam perked up a bit, “Colin, mate, he said he’d kill her... if I don’t get to Coffs in...” he looked down at his watch, “half an hour... to meet the bloke... he’s going to kill her and then me... and then most likely you... and...” his face turned a pale shade of green and he quickly clamped his hands over his mouth and made a run for the loo – just in time to empty what little contents were left in his stomach.
“Who?!” Colin called out to him, as he followed him down the hallway. “Who is going to kill her?!”
Adam looked up from the floor where he’d just thrown up in the toilet, his head throbbing, “Dob... or one of his men. What the fuck does it matter, who... she’s dead and it’s all my fault.”
“Dob? Your... uncle?”
Adam nodded then shook his head...”Yes, er...no... Ohhh,” he threw up again. “He’s not really my uncle.”
“I’ll... um... just wait out here,” Colin told him, heading back down the hallway to give Adam some privacy and to think over what Adam had just told him.
He’d known something wasn’t quite right with that so-called uncle of his, knew the man was not to be trusted. If only he’d acted on his gut feelings and not left Raine alone... if only... He shook his head, sighed. Life was full of “if onlys”, now wasn’t the time to sit around wondering what might have happened, now was time to take action. He stood up, headed back down the hall, listening just outside the bathroom door.
When Colin was sure Adam was finished being sick, he stood in the doorway, “Better?” he asked, handing Adam a towel.
Adam nodded, washed the bit of sick from his face and mouth.
“Good, then let’s go get my sister back.”
