“The New Hire”

“Good news, Mate,” Colin said to Arthur, as he limped into the garage office, Adam trailing behind him.

“You’re coming back to work?” Arthur asked, hopefully, as he looked up from a stack of papers on the desk in front of him. The phone was ringing and he quickly answered it and put the caller on hold, along with the four previous callers who were all still waiting.

“No, don’t be silly,” Colin chuckled, “Meet Adam, my brother-in-law, who also happens to be a crack mechanic and has agreed to hire on here to help with the load."

Arthur smiled, looking the young man up and down, thinking to himself that Adam didn’t really look like someone who’d be working in a garage. “Very nice to meet you, Adam,” he said, extending his hand for him to shake.

“Nice to meet you, too, Arthur,” Adam replied, shaking the younger man’s hand.

“After I show Adam here around, do you think you might be able to get him started on the work load for the day, Mate?” Colin asked Arthur.

Arthur looked grim for a moment, then put on a smile and nodded. “Of course, Colin. It would be my pleasure.”

“Ta, Mate,” Colin replied, then turned to Adam, “Well then, let’s get you a coverall and show you to the tools then, shall we?”

“After you,” Adam told him, as the pair walked out to the garage bay, leaving Arthur to his phones and paperwork.
