Just like his Father
The last 72 hours had been a whirlwind of emotions for Jim Braddock. He spent most of that time period between the NICU and Ivy's bedside. Despite the best efforts of the NICU staff the bilirubin level in Baby Braddock had been climbing higher. Dr. Nichols had explained it was due in part to the bruising the baby had sustained during Ivy's attack and the subsequent birth.
When the staff began to explain the procedure Jim felt overwhelmed, “Just do what you have to, to save him” he answered. He spent was seemed like hours signing consent forms. Treatment included exchange transfusion and further phototherapy. It was unknown if there was any damage resulting from the high bilirubin levels. But Baby Braddock was finally beginning to turn the corner.
An exhausted Jim watched him through the window of the NICU as the nurses changed and fed him. “I'm here for you buddy”, he whispered. Nancy Kemmer, the NICU nurse on duty, smiled at Jim through the glass when she checked on Baby Braddock. “Little guy is a fighter just like his Father”, she thought to herself.
