The Mayor
Bridgid sat across the table from Jack as he scanned the morning paper. She sighed deeply to get his attention but he just turned the page without a single look.
A few moments passed before she picked up a Fruit Loop from the table. Flicking it at the back page of the paper, she scrunched down in her chair a little.
Jack still didn’t look her way but he spoke lowly as he asked "What is it, Siren?"
"I was thinking…."
As she paused he lowered the paper slowly. "Should I be frightened?" he asked with a wry grin.
"Smartass!" she giggled "No you shouldn’t be frightened but I was thinking about what we’d spoken about months ago, about you running for Mayor. I think its time you throw your hat into the ring. This town is getting bigger and we really need some kind of government in place. We need a treasury too. That firefighter from New York, Tommy Gavin is going to be arriving soon. He has to be paid along with Tom and Steve. Even with the rest of our volunteering for the department, we still need funds for equipment."
Raising the paper up again, Jack didn’t say another word for what seemed like a half hour to her but it was actually just a few moments.
"Very well, Bridgid. Call Mister McCaffery and announce the elections. I will run for mayor."
"Yes!" she said jubilantly. "I can’t wait to see who else runs or who runs for town counsel. I hope Richie Roberts is interested in solicitor and I bet Max Skinner would make a brilliant treasurer. I’ll go call the paper now."
So the add was placed as follows;
Captain Jack Aubrey would like to announce his candidacy for Mayor of the Glen. Positions are open for two city councilmen (or women), solicitor, treasurer and secretary. Candidates should announce their desire to run no later than April 25th.
"There we go, Mayor John Aubrey has a ring to it." Bridgid thought to herself. "His honor and Mrs. Jack Aubrey. Hmmm, well he'll always be Jack to me."
