Bobbie’s News
Max drove by the front of the bank and saw Bobbie in her usual place, sitting on the park bench opposite, waiting for him to arrive. He really must make her a key holder if she was going to continually beat him to work every day she was on duty. He waved at her and smiled before turning the corner to park behind the building.
Two minutes later he emerged from the side of the bank and took his wallet out as he crossed the road towards her. Handing her a couple of notes he winked at her. “Good morning, Bobbie. Would you like to do the honours while I open up?”
Bobbie grinned and took the offered money. “G’Day, Max,” she grinned, standing from the park bench. “Any preference this morning?”
“Surprise me, Love.” Max replied, seeing her safely across the road. He watched her heading down to Lucy’s before unlocking the thick wooden door to the bank.
By the time Bobbie returned with a couple of boxes he had the tea brewed and a tray on the desk in his office.
“Oh, I’m glad we’re in here rather than the kitchen this morning,” Bobbie stated, placing two muffins on the plate Max had on the tray.
“What was in the other box?” Max asked. “And why are you glad we’re in the office this morning?” He sat with his head slightly to one side and an eyebrow cocked.
Bobbie poured the tea before she spoke, then sat down opposite Max. “I’ve got some news, Max; it just feels better that I should tell you in your office rather than over the kitchen table.
Max put down the muffin he was about to bite into and waited for her to speak again.
“I got my finals results through. They were waiting on my doormat when I got home yesterday…”
“And?” Max asked quietly.
Bobbie him a letter she’d taken from her bag. Max took it and silently read it through. He put it down on his desk and stood up, opening up his arms.
Bobbie couldn’t keep a straight face any longer. She beamed as she jumped up and accepted the kiss and embrace from her boss. Max hugged her for a few moments in silence, then stepped back so that he could look into her face.
“Congratulations, Bobbie. I knew you’d do it, and top of the class as well. I’m so proud of you.”
He went back to his chair and took a sip of his tea. He watched Bobbie make short work of her muffin. She stopped when she realised he was watching her and blushed. “Sorry, Max. I was so excited that I couldn’t eat last night.”
Max laughed. “You still haven’t told me what’s in the other box.”
“Oh, cream cakes for our elevenses,” she smiled back at him.
“You’re too good to me.”
“Don’t be silly, Max…you paid!”
“Oh yes, so I did,” he replied.
“I’ve left your change in the kitchen, I’ll go get it.”
“No need, Bobbie. I think it’s my turn to restock the tea and coffee, so put it in the jar for later. So, what say I take you to lunch after we close up, and you can tell me your plans.”
“I’d like that, Boss. I think I’m going to need all the help I can get from you in the near future,” she smiled.
They both sat back and relaxed with their tea and cake before getting ready for another banking day.
