Time Out for Adults
Rosemary waited in her car outside the kindy. Amanda had noticed the car backed into one of the few parking places she’d had made in the yard. She didn’t recognize the car or the woman smoking cigarettes and tossing butts out of the window. She had in mind to go out there and ask her to pick them up but Molly drove up to the door and got out to bring in Nic.
Molly was always one of the first to arrive and as yet no one else had brought in a child so Amanda went to open the door and greet them.
Rosemary jumped out of her car and ran over to Molly, “You thought you were so smart, well you’ve delivered him to me haven’t you.” She went to open the back door of Molly’s car.
“You can’t have him Rosemary, get away from my car.”
“He’s mine, you little bitch,” she went to wrench open the door and Amanda came down the steps and ran over to the car.
“Hey, what are you doing?”
“Picking up my son that’s what.” Rosemary got the door open.
“No you aren’t,” Molly grabbed her arm and pulled her back, “leave him alone, get away…” Rosemary pushed her back against the car.
Amanda fearing for the boy’s safety jumped in the back seat and closed the door locking it from the inside. She pulled out her cell phone and called the police. The two women were pushing and shoving each other around and she tried to shield the fight from Nic.
Sheriff Biebe and Siobhan arrived and soon had the tussle in hand, everyone was questioned including Amanda who gave account and how the woman had sat in her parking lot for a while waiting. In the end both Molly and Rosemary were taken to the station for further questioning. Amanda took Nic inside the school.
Later that morning, Dom was called into the police station to corroborate Molly’s story. Once he found out what was going on he called his solicitor and armed with the DNA report she arrived.
Biebe wanted to know who had legal custody of the child and it turned out Rosemary did since Dom’s claim had yet to go to court but because of the special circumstances, child abandonment charges being brought against Rosemary they would have to go over to Coffs and obtain an ad item guardian for the child.
Molly was beside herself, scratched and crying trying to drink a cup of tea brought to her. Rosemary was sullen and quiet. Dom was mad.
Rosemary was asked if she had legal representation and she mentioned Richie Roberts.
Richie had been dreading this call but he picked up his briefcase and drove up to the police station.
He talked with Biebe and Siobhan for awhile and then went in to see Rosemary.
“What the fuck are you tryin’ to do Rosemary?”
“Just trying to get my son back.”
“There are better ways than what you tried. So you want me to represent you?”
“Yeah, that’s what you do right, look after my interest? Well my interest is out there in that room, I want my son back and I want Dom so figure out how to make that happen.”
“I can’t give you Dom and whether I can hand you the kid is very iffy, I’ll do what I can for you. Right now I’ll try to keep you outta jail which is where you’re headed.”
Richie left her sitting in the room and went back out to talk to Biebe he nodded at Dom who looked like he might explode any minute. He really felt for Dom but he couldn’t do anything for him.
“So who gets to pick him up from the kindy today?” Dom was asking his solicitor.
His solicitor told him it would be decided in Coffs and she gathered up her papers and was preparing to leave and get things started at the courthouse.
“This is not right,” he shook his head, “little kid just wanted to go to school today.”
