Miss Peeg’s Discovery

Miss Peeg said goodbye to Richie as he headed off to Coffs again, the sign had been placed in the window after his walk through with the contractor earlier that morning, Flat to Let Inquire Within, it said so they were to have a tenant. She had looked at the flat herself but decided it wasn’t what she really wanted. She had a real estate person looking for the perfect place for her but as yet nothing had turned up.

Miss Peeg busied herself with a bit of dusting and cleaning however her eyes kept straying to the file cabinet in Mr. Robert’s office. Something had been bothering ever since her trip to Coffs with Mr. Wade on Saturday. She resisted as long as she could and pulled out the file and went to her desk.

Within a short time she had information she wished she didn’t have. Making herself a cup of tea she sat down again at her desk to decide what to do. Of course the registration of the marriage could be explained as an oversight, lost piece of paper but the fact that no marriage license had ever been sought could not be explained. She examined the paper she held in her hand, there were two witnesses to the marriage as required but their signatures were so crabbed and flourished they were indecipherable. He had said hadn’t he that there were only the three of them present.

There was no wonder then that he wanted the girl to have the wedding she deserved…she hadn’t had one had she? Miss Peeg finished her tea and stopped on the way to the sink in the back…then there was the land deal wasn’t there she’d turned everything over to him all in his name now it was. It angered her that he had done such a thing…he had deceived Liana.

Walking back to her desk she carefully placed the papers back in the folder and returned it to the file cabinet. He did love her didn’t he…she had got the impression he did but then he was so adept at deception…he’d also deceived Mr. Roberts. Miss Peeg moved papers around on her desk and took a deep breath. What to do…what to do…perhaps nothing…yes perhaps.
