I Don’t Have Green Eyes (Toni’s Fantasy – 5)
Richie had never been afraid of confrontation, never backed down, never gave an inch unless the other guy gave first. This wasn’t some other guy…this was Toni.
He’d worried himself sick over her and his suspicions, however unfounded, he had them. He left the Tavern after one drink and headed home. He was determined to get to the bottom of this thing…whatever the outcome…he couldn’t go on like this.
He came through the front door and went into his den depositing his briefcase on his desk and removing his jacket. The house was quiet and he looked out the back door to see her in her garden dead heading plants. The kitchen smelled good, something was in the oven…he paced around not wanting to cause a scene in this seemingly blissful domestic atmosphere.
Fuck it
“Toni,” he called out the door, “can you come in here please?”
Toni looked up…no hello? “Sure,” she pulled off her gardening gloves and laid them on the bench outside the door. “Hi love…bad day?” she asked tilting her head. She could see he was worked up about something.
“No…bad week. He stopped pacing and looked into her eyes, “I need to know Toni…right now…if there’s…” he was having a hard time even saying the words out loud, “are you seeing somebody?”
If he’d said the moon was on fire she couldn’t have been more shocked, “What?...Richie why would you even ask such a question?”
“Are you?”
“No and no again Richie…what…what would make you think such a thing…I love you.”
“There’s something going on here Toni you’ve not been…well acting normal…”
Toni’s hand went to her mouth, she didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Is it not normal to want to make love to the man you love?” she asked.
“It just seemed to have stepped up lately…I’d say three times a day is pushing it.”
“Oh you would…well how often would you like it Mr. Roberts?”
“I’m not complaining about that Toni I just think there’s something else going on?”
“You think I’m oversexed is that it…well I can fix that!” she fired back
“No…I want to know what’s driving it…I know you…you’re fired up about something or someone and it ain’t me.”
Toni laughed, “I’ve heard it all now…a man walks in the house and says to his wife ‘you’re giving me too much sex,’ duh…”
“This is not funny Toni…you see me laughing?”
No she didn’t see him laughing he looked hurt and angry she dropped her head, “I’ve been fantasying,” she said quietly.” And bit her lip.
“You’ve been what?” his voice rose
“I uh…made up a fantasy man…an archer type…man,” she couldn’t tell him she’d seen an actual man…he might go after him…suddenly none of this was funny to her anymore…the look on his face.
“Oh…you needed a fantasy huh…I’m not enough?”
“No Richie…my god you’re more than enough…I was just…playing.”
“I don’t play games with the woman I love unless it’s mutual…and…I don’t have green eyes.” He left the kitchen went into his den and closed the door.
Toni burst into tears.
