Early to Bed

Toni had been helping to take down the Christmas trees all morning and she wasn’t feeling right. Her lower back was killing her and she decided to take a rest stopping by the bathroom where she found she was spotting. That and the pain in her back sent a flag up and she sat down on the side of the bed and placed a call to her doctor. The baby wasn’t due until March it was way too early to be thinking about going into labor. She was instructed to come into the hospital so she went to find Travis, he wasn’t in the house and Tomalee said she hadn’t seen him since he and Tee took off on the four wheelers. Tee had gotten one for Christmas and Travis wanted to make sure he knew what he was doing before he let him take off on his own.

She placed a call to Sarah McGee.

“Sarah, I think I might be going into labor, the doctor said for me to go to the hospital and Travis is out on the property somewhere…”

“It’s too early…oh Toni I’m on my way go lay down somewhere until I get there.”

Toni went into the den and lay down on the sofa. Tomalee wanted to know what was wrong and she told her what she thought was happening. Tomalee found Lee in the laundry room and sent him off on his bike to find Travis.

Sarah got her to the hospital in Coffs and they took her right in to labor and delivery. Soon an IV was hooked up and she was given something to stop her labor. Tests were run and her doctor came in and examined her.

“Everything looks fine, Toni but I’m afraid you’re going to have to take to your bed, dear.”

“Take to my bed, what do you mean?”

He looked up at her, “We want this baby to go full term and in order for that to happen you’re going to have to spend the next two and a half months in bed, I’m sorry I know you’re an active woman but this is how it has to be.”

“Oh no…” Toni turned her head into the pillow, “I’ll go mad.”

Her doctor chuckled, “No you won’t you’ll do fine I’m sure you’ll have plenty of things to keep you occupied while you’re resting.”

Travis, looking a little pale and nervous walked into the room, “What’s going on?”

The doctor explained the situation, “Toni and the baby will be okay?” Travis asked.

“Oh yes, this happens quite frequently, they’ll be fine she just needs to stay in bed.”

Travis went to Toni and kissed her, “On your back until March…I’m not going to have to tie you in the bed am I?”

“No,” she was a little teary eyed, “this is awful.”

“It’s what we have to do so we’ll do it,” he brushed her hair back from her face.

“We’ll find you lots of books to read, and you’ll have your laptop and the TV.” Sarah smiled and patted her hand.

“I don’t even have the nursery done…oh…”

“Hey, honey there are plenty of people to help, you pick out what you want online and let the rest of us worry about putting it together.”

Travis was being very loving and supportive of her as he would be but this whole bedrest thing worried him. Toni was not one to sit still for long this wasn’t going to be easy for her.

She was kept in the hospital for four hours and allowed to go home. Travis carried her into the house and into the bedroom. The household had been alerted by Sarah and clean sheets and covers were put on the bed by Lee, everything shipshape he said leaving the room. Tomalee brought in a large vase of flowers from the living room for her to enjoy. Bedside tables had been brought in to hold things she might want and the bed tray was waiting with a pot of tea.

After everyone cleared out of their bedroom Travis climbed up in the bed with her and took her hand and kissed it. “We’re going to spoil you, you know that don’t you, honey?”

“I’ll be rotten by March.” She looked over at the partially finished doorway into the nursery. “I guess I’ll get up close and personal with the framing crew.”

“Yeah of all times for this to be going on. I’ll get Dad to finish this up right away, the damn butcher shop can wait. Meanwhile if you want we can move to Mom and Dad’s old room.”

“No, at least this will be something happening around me, I’m going to be so isolated in here.”

“Don’t count on it, you’ll probably be running people out of here. I’m going to get Kyle to put in a temporary set up so you can talk to anybody in the house at anytime. We’ll make it work, Toni.” He kissed her softly. “It’s gonna work out fine.”

“No sex…”

“Nope, none…I can’t even get you excited.” He grinned.

“Well then you’d better leave…go ride a horse or something. I’m so sorry Travis, this is not going to be easy for you either.”

“I can handle it, I love you Toni, we can do anything you know that…anything.”
